2014-06-26
San Jose lofts have grown more popular in recent years because they have an urban look and offer open floor plans and open, multi-story living spaces. Traditionally, the loft condo was thought of as semi-raw industrial space that was notable for its lack of finish work (e.g., exposed duct work and cement or antique hardwood floors) and ideal for artists and start-up businesses eager to combine their living and work space.
These days, exposed duct work and cement floors can be a design choice for more traditional residences so a modern loft is now more generally synonymous with modern urban flex space. Living in a loft doesn’t necessarily mean sacrificing refined interior details and living where you work.
San Jose has a few stand-out loft communities, including the Markethouse Lofts but inventory is extremely low. Plant 51 is a loft and condo community at 88 Bush Street downtown. This is a converted, turn-of-the-century fruit cannery that has been reinforced and retrofitted. Its popularity keeps the inventory low.
Lofts are all about giving homeowners options about the placement of furniture and the flow of the living space. The lofts at Plant 51 retain the old brick and steel beams and have as many as three generous floors and 18 -foot ceilings, which let the light flood in and afford city views and Cahill Park views.
This building has a huge, landscaped interior courtyard with lots of open, outdoor seating and dining space, a15 foot barbecue pit, a bicycle kitchen for repairs and a state-of-the-art two-story fitness center and mezzanine lounge. This loft community is directly across from the Diridon Transit Station and HP Pavilion and within easy walking distance to some of the best downtown San Jose has to offer.
We expect the shortage of lofts to continue until builders get the idea that people want to live in these cool spaces. If you're looking for something in particular (square footage, view location, etc.), please contact us so we can keep an eye out for you.
